“You can’t handle the truth!” This great line from the movie “A Few Good Men” is more than a question from a movie but something we need to be brutally honest with ourselves about if we are ever going to overcome any personal or professional problem, especially those facing our country and the world. Denial is not just a river in Egypt; there are those who would prefer to keep living in it because they would rather pretend to be asleep than live with more than their eyes open.
One of the greatest pieces of advice I have ever received was from my former 1st Sergeant, Inspector & Instructor Staff, Richmond, Virginia. "Don't come to me with a problem unless you have a potential solution in mind." This core concept was always within me, but receiving this advice released it and has served me well in my career since. As a project manager and business analyst, this key component is vital in solving any problem and how those in the profession approach problem-solving.
Problem divided by root causes; develop potential solutions for each root cause with clear definitions and performance indicators defining success at various levels or outcomes. Adjusting the potential solutions as necessary to achieve the desired outcome significantly reduces or eliminates the problem.
Starting with some of the subjects I outlined in Chapter 10, Balance & Chapter 11, Technology, Internet, and Social Media in The Warrior Within, I believe that if 15-20 individuals could gather outside the noise of either political party, talking head, or specific media channel, most of the country's problems could be solved. To increase this potential, take a second group of 15-20 and have them review and improve on the 1st group review and then a 3rd group to review the 2nd group. I’d love to create a foundation to do just this, but until I win more than a billion dollars in the lottery, I’ll start by creating a blog and doing my best to work through an item or issue, asking for feedback from those willing to offer up any and see where that might lead to.
I understand all too well that there are those who have a problem for every solution, and those individuals not interested in solving the problem are part of it. As they proclaim false outrage or other nonsense, direct them to call 1 – 800 – WAA – AAHH, extension Boohoo, and ask for Mr. Tears.
